The town of Middleburg was the primary Spanish bastion in the province of Zeeland during the Dutch war against occupation. Under siege by the Zeelanders under the overall command of William of Orange, the town held out for almost two years, but the increasing cruelty of the Spanish, led by the viceroy the Duke of Alba and Don Frederic the king's son brought about a widespread uprising. Under increasing pressure, the Spanish withdrew from Middleburg in February 1574, ceding Zeeland to the rebels.
