After the fall of the Bastille on 14 July 1789, the National Assembly ordered Pierre-François Palloy, commander-general of the National Guard, to raze the former prison. During this process, Palloy had a number of monuments and keepsakes crafted from stones and metal recovered from the site, and in 1792 presented this medal to members of the Assembly.
