Description
ATTICA, Athens. Circa 454-404 BC. AR Tetradrachm (26mm, 17.19 g, 3h). Helmeted head of Athena right / Owl standing right, head facing; olive sprig and crescent behind; all within incuse square. Kroll 8; HGC 4, 1597. Fully lustrous. Choice EF. A well engraved head struck in high relief, with a pleasing archaic smile.

From the Style Collection.

With so many Athens “owl” tetradrachms of the high-classical era on the market, one can be highly selective in picking one. This example has much to recommend it: Athena’s head is well proportioned with a pleasant smile, her helmet and coiffeur are sharply detailed, and the reverse is well centered and lacks no design element.
