Antoninus Pius. AD 138-161. AR Denarius (17mm, 3.21 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck AD 138. Bare head right / Minerva standing left, holding Victory and shield set on ground; spear against left arm. RIC III 2; RSC 657a. Moderate iridescent cabinet tone. EF. With a exceptional portrait and a charming image of Minerva.

One of the first denarii struck after Antoninus officially assumed the title of Augustus in July of AD 138. The bareheaded portrait is a humble touch that Antoninus would return to in his coin portraits throughout the reign.
