Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / INDVLGENTIA AVGG, S C below lion, IN CARTH in exergue, the Dea Caelestis riding lion running right over water gushing from rock, holding drum and scepter. RIC IV 415c. Deep green patina, light cleaning marks. Near EF. An exceptional example of this rare variety, with an engaging youthful portrait.

This medium bronze merits the Style Collection both by virtue of its handsome adolescent portrait of Caracalla and the unusually evocative reverse, which shows Dea Caelestis, a Romanized version of the African goddess Tanit, riding a lion over a stream gushing from the ground. The type refers both to the gods of the Severan homeland and, apparently, to the construction of an aqueduct for the city of Carthage.
