Elagabalus. AD 218-222. AR Antoninianus (21mm, 5.18 g, 12h). Rome mint. Struck AD 219-220. Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Laetitia standing left, holding wreath and rudder set on globe. RIC IV 94; Thirion 113; RSC 72. Evenly toned with much luster remaining. Choice EF. Well struck and attractive in hand.

Introduced by Caracalla, the silver Antoninianus (a modern term – we are not sure what the Romans called it) was continued by his immediate successor Macrinus and into the reign of Elagabalus, before being abruptly discontinued circa AD 219-220. Having attained the throne by claiming to be the illegitimate son of Caracalla, it is not surprising that his early portraits strongly resemble those of the young Caracalla. Though not particularly rare, Antoniniani of Elagabalus rarely come as choice as this specimen.
