Description
Salonina. Augusta, AD 254-268. Antoninianus (20mm, 3.81 g, 6h). Rome mint, 4th officina. 6th issue, AD 260-261. Diademed and draped bust right on crescent / Vesta seated left, holding patera and sceptre; Q in exergue. MIR 36, 365dd corr. (officina mark); RIC V (sole reign) 32; Cunetio 987. Deep old cabinet tone with underlying luster. Near EF. Unusually bold strike for era.

From the Style Collection. Ex Nicholas Holmes Collection.

The portrait of Salonina, wife of Gallienus, on this antoninianus may not be particularly flattering, but it appears to be accurate, as it closely resembles a surviving portrait bust of this empress in the Hermitage Museum. It portrays her with a rather troubled expression in keeping with the chaotic times.
