Description
EGYPT, Alexandria. Lucius Verus. AD 161-169. BI Tetradrachm (24.5mm, 12.41 g, 11h). Dated RY 3 (AD 162/3)). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust left, seen from behind / Roma standing left with foot on cuirass, holding spear and parazonium; to left, shield on ground; L Γ (date) in field. Köln –; Dattari (Savio) –; K&G –; RPC IV.4 Online 14024; Emmett 2329.3 (R5). Lightly toned, minor porosity. VF. Extremely rare.

This reverse type has traditionally been identified as Ares but a similar seated figure is identified by inscription as Roma on coins from the previous year. In the imperial series, both Marti Pacifero and Roma Victrix are depicted with a foot on a cuirass but Mars holds a branch while Roma holds a spear and parazonium, as on this coin.
