Description
Umayyad Caliphate, Silver coinage. AR Dirham (25.1mm, 2.88 g, 4h). Al-Kufa mint. Dated AH 127 (AD 744/5). Obverse: annulets ◦◦ ◦◦ ◦◦ ◦◦ ◦◦ . Klat —; al-‘Ajlan 249/127 (this piece). Obverse a little porous. Near VF, toned. Of the highest rarity, apparently the only published specimen.
Ex Morton & Eden 95 (24 October 2018), lot 41.
In AH 127, ‘Abdallah b. Mu‘awiya launched a rebellion against the Umayyad governor of Kufa during the month of Muharram. ‘Abdallah’s revolt was unsuccessful; he was expelled from the city and made his way to Isbahan, leaving Kufa still loyal to the Umayyads. Later that year, however, the city was taken by the Kharijite al-Dahhak b. Qays al-Shaybani, who installed a governor of his own there. It was this individual who struck dirhams at Kufa in AH 128 which bear the Kharijite slogan la hukma illa lillah in the obverse margin. But al-Dahhak was killed in battle in AH 128 by Marwan II, after which Kufa returned to Umayyad control. Standard Umayyad dirhams were struck there in AH 128 and 129.
The existence of this coin, which is believed to be unique, demonstrates that the mint of Kufa had already reopened by the time al-Dahhak began striking Kharijite dirhams there in AH 128.
