Description
THRACE, Mesambria. Circa 225-175 BC. AR Tetradrachm (32.5mm, 16.48 g, 12h). In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; in inner left field, helmet right above ΔI (engraved over previous control mark). Karayotov I 49 (O19/R53); Price 1001; HGC 3, 1567. Lightly toned, with a faint iridescence, double struck on obverse, indications of undertype on reverse. VF.
It is clear that the ΔI control mark on the reverse is engraved over a different control (possibly a monogram). However, a coin using the die with the prior control is known, so it is possible that the change in controls was made before the die was first used.
Closing Date and Time: 17 April 2024 at 10:10:40 ET.
All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
