In 1893, Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen set off in the Fram from the remote New Siberian Islands in an attempt to reach the North Pole. Nansen harnessed the east-west currents, intentionally freezing his ship in pack ice and waiting for the transpolar drift stream to carry him to the pole. The ice proved frustratingly slow moving, and a group set off to reach the pole via dogsled. Though the voyage was ultimately unsuccessful in its primary goal, the expedition was crucial in the advancement of both Arctic geography and of the technology and techniques required for exploring this desolate region.
