Description
SICILY, Halykiai. Circa 390-370 BC. Æ Tetras (14.5mm, 2.79 g, 11h). Boar standing left / Acheloios Mazaro as man-headed bull standing left. Cf. Lazzarini, Monetazione, Series III, Em. 1; MSP I 28; cf. CNS 44 (Himera?); HGC 2, 493 (Himeraia?). Dark green patina, smoothed. Good VF.
Ex Dr. P. Vogl Collection (Leu Numismatik AG 10, 24 October 2021), lot 2014, purchased from Münzen und Medaillen AG, 1990.
Traditionally in this series, the boar is on the reverse, and the man-headed bull the obverse, but clearly here the latter is on the punch side. The only other unmarked example is the MSP plate coin (= CNG E-357, lot 55), where it appears that the boar should also be considered the obverse on that piece.
Closing Date and Time: 25 September 2024 at 10:09:20 ET.
All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
