THRACE, Bizya. Septimius Severus. AD 193-211. Æ Pentassarion (29mm, 13.33 g, 7h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / Capaneus advancing right, helmeted head left, holding spear and shield, with left foot on low wall, preparing to scale the walls of Thebes by ladder. Tachev, Bizye – (O8/R–); Jurokova, Bizye –; Varbanov –. Earthen green patina, slight roughness. Near VF. Extremely rare and unpublished, presently unique. Known for Septimius from the magistrate Titus Statilius Barbarus, but not naming the city alone..

One of the famous “seven against Thebes”, the Argive Capaneus boasted that even Zeus could not stop him from taking the city. Such hubris led Zeus to strike Capaneus with a thunderbolt as he attempted to scale the walls of Thebes on a ladder.
