Description
Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, AD 286-293. Antoninianus (19.5mm, 3.86 g, 12h). ‘RSR’ mint. IMP CARAVSIVS P F AV, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / ADVENTVS AVG, Carausius on horseback riding left, raising right hand and holding transverse scepter in left; RSR. RIC V.5 586 (forthcoming; this coin cited and illustrated); RIC V –. Dark green patina, light roughness and cleaning scratches. VF. Unique. The only example noted in RIC V.5.

From the Dr. Malcolm Lyne Collection. Ex Freeman & Sear MBS 8 (5 February 2003), lot 482; Mike Vosper FPL 113 (May 2000), no. 36.

This bust appears to feature Carausius holding a globe in his right hand. Carausius may additionally be trabeate here as well rather than draped and cuirassed. While the cataloging has left the bust type as radiate, draped, and cuirassed to harmonize with RIC V.5’s cataloging of this coin, it is this cataloger’s perspective that Carausius is indeed holding a globe here in his right hand and that the ‘RSR’ mint AR Denarius RIC V.5 143 [Giessener Münzhandlung 73 (11 October 1995), lot 464] is another example of this extremely rare bust type.
