Description
SICILY, Syracuse. Second Democracy. 466-405 BC. AR Tetradrachm (24mm, 16.86 g, 1h). Struck circa 430 BC. Charioteer, holding kentron in right hand, reins in both, driving slow quadriga right; above, Nike flying left, crowning charioteer with open wreath / Head of Arethousa right, hair in sakkos ornamented by a maeander pattern; four dolphins around. Boehringer Series XX, 644 (V327/R443); HGC 2, 1319; SNG ANS 209 (same dies); SNG Lloyd 1350 (same dies); BMC 113 (same dies); Gillet 583 (same rev. die); Wallenbrock fig. 2.11 (this coin). Lightly toned, with some blue iridescence, edge split, light scratches. Good VF.
