Description
KINGS of MACEDON. Antigonos I Monophthalmos. As Strategos of Asia, 320-306/5 BC. AR Hemiobol (8mm, 0.37 g, 10h). Sidon mint. Dated RY 1 of an uncertain king (309/8 BC). Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; ΣI in left field. Price 3477 corr. (denomination, A not Λ on rev.); Newell, Dated –; DCA2 868 corr. (denomination). Toned, some roughness. VF.

Price misread the letter on the reverse of these fractions, which he also mistakenly listed as an obol. While the letter could be interpreted as a control letter, this would be a unique anomaly for Alexanders struck at Sidon; the most likely interpretation is that the letter is a date. The placement of the issue within the much later series (marked MA through MΔ on tetradrachms) by DCA2 is likely, as a year 1 dated issue would not fit earlier, and the style of the obverse is more compatible with that found on the later series at Sidon.
