Description
KINGS of MACEDON. Antigonos I Monophthalmos. As Strategos of Asia, 320-306/5 BC, or king, 306/5-301 BC. AR Tetradrachm (26mm, 16.55 g, 12h). In the name and types of Alexander III. Uncertain mint in Coelesyria or Phoenicia. Struck circa 317-301 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; in left field, head of boar left. Price 3575. Toned, porous, scrapes, chisel marks and delamination on reverse. VF.

While it is fairly certain that this issue belongs to the region of Coelesyria or Phoenicia, the boundaries of the Antigonid and Ptolemaic possessions there continually shifted during the period of its striking. Thus, although the Antigonids usually controlled most of this region during this time, this coin might instead be a product of a mint under Ptolemaic authority.
