Description
LYDIA, Maeonia. Nero. AD 54-68. Æ (18mm, 4.40 g, 12h). Tiberius Claudius Menekrates, strategos. Struck circa AD 65. Laureate head right / Veiled goddess standing right, holding scepter over shoulder. Hochard 1199 (D4/R4); Kurth 78; RPC I 3011. Brown patina, smoothing. Good VF.
The goddess on the reverse has been described as Boule (Imhoof-Blumer), Hestia (Hochard, Kurth and BMC), and Demeter (Waddington). Unfortunately, none of the three make a regular appearance on the early coinage of Maeonia to sway the evidence to favor one over the others. Demeter becomes slightly more regular under the Antonines.
Closing Date and Time: 2 April 2025 at 12:33:40 ET.
All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
