Description
SELEUCIS and PIERIA, Antioch. temp. Nero. AD 54-68. Æ Chalkous (14mm, 2.26 g, 12h). Dated year 114 of the Caesarean Era (AD 65/6). Draped bust of Artemis right / Bow and quiver. McAlee 111; RPC I 4302.11 (this coin). Earthen red-brown patina, light porosity, a few scratches. Near VF. Rare.

From the Richard McAlee Collection.

McAlee notes that there are three distinct varieties of this type, possibly struck in different years. The first variety has a reverse legend XAΛKOYΣ ΔIP (chalkous, Caesarean Era year 114 = AD 65/6), the second variety omits the year (possibly dating to Caesarean Era year 145 = AD 145), and the third variety, as the present coin, lacks any legend at all (possibly dating to Caesarean Era year 177 = AD 128/9, placing it during the reign of Hadrian). This conjecture is based on style and fabric and, for now, all three varieties are placed under Nero.
