EGYPT, Alexandria. Claudius. AD 41-54. Æ Diobol (24mm, 7.39 g, 11h). Rare hybrid. Dated RY 13 (AD 52/3). Laureate head right; L I (date) to right / Eagle standing right on thunderbolt, head left, wings closed; L IΓ (date) across field. Cf. Köln 105; cf. Dattari (Savio) 156; cf. K&G 12.79; cf. RPC I 5193; cf. Emmett 80.13. References for eagle reverse. Red-brown surfaces, porosity, areas of weakness, edge flaw, reverse scrapes, obverse off center. Near VF. This hybrid combines two types minted in two different years; the obverse from a die of RY 10 and the reverse of RY 13. The obverse is known for two different obverse diobols of year 10: Nilus bust (RPC 5174) and winged caduceus with grain ears (RPC 5175).
