Description
PERU, Peru-Bolivian Confederation. State of South Peru. 1836-1839. AR 8 Reales (38mm, 26.98 g, 12h). Cuzco mint. Dated 1838 BA. Radiant sun with five stars above / Smoldering volcano with crowned tower to left; cornucopia below; in background, ship under sail left on sea; all within wreath. The P in PERUANA double punched. KM 170.4. Toned, hairlines, punches and marks. Good VF. Rare.

Though this cataloger is unaware of any detailed study of this issue, the present variety exhibiting a repunched P on the obverse appears to be quite rare. Of the approximately 200 examples of this date on CoinArchives, only eight specimens exhibit the same feature, all from the same die. The variety also appears to be absent from the massive Guttag Collection.
