Description
Pre-reform issues, Arab-Byzantine. Imperial Image coinage. Æ Fals (25.9mm, 5.67 g, 6h). Without mint-name (probably struck at Gerasa/Jerash). Undated (probably struck in AH 65 / AD 685). Modified cross or spear on three steps, flanked by two standing figures, each wearing long robes and Arab headdress, their right hands on their sheathed swords / Large M with cross above and A below; ANNO - NIKO around. Foss p. 61; Amitai-Preiss et al. D11a . Good Fine, obverse cleaned. Extremely rare.
Foss suggests that ‘the type apparently represents the caliph Abd al-Malik and his brother Abd al-Aziz, who were jointly proclaimed as successors to their father Marwan in 684/85. It is probably an accession issue of Abd al-Malik, who assumed supreme power, with his brother recognised as his successor, in April 685.’
The final winners of all CNG Islamic Auction 9 lots will be determined during the live sale that will be held on 24-25 April 2025.
