Description
Pre-reform issues, Arab-Byzantine. North Africa. AV Solidus (13.9mm, 4.39 g, 7h). Without mint-name (struck in Carthage). Undated (struck circa AH 80-85 / AD 700-705. NON EST dS NISI IPSE [...] S E I (for NON EST DEUS NISI IPSE SOLUS CUI SOCIUS NON EST, ‘There is no God but He Alone, to whom there is no associate’), Two facing Imperial busts, wearing trifoliate crowns, the left bust bearded, the right bust clean-shaven / [DEUS MAGNUS] (?) ET OMNI IN MANVS, for ‘God is Great, and everything is in His hands’, Cippus set on three steps. Cf. Bernardi 8 (no point below or to right of cippus); Album 115 . AU, a superb example with full lustre and die-polish lines visible. Extremely rare.
The first part of the reverse legend is coarsely engraved and difficult to read, but ET OMNI IN MANVS is extremely clear. Bernardi interpreted a similar inscription which he read as OMN N IN M A NO (p. 101, the fifth example) as a highly abbreviated version of ‘Omnia Noscens Ingenitus Magnus Alius Non est’, but this is perhaps more ingenious than plausible. It seems more likely that this, like the legend on the coin offered here, is in fact a version of ‘God is Great, and everything is in His hands’.
The final winners of all CNG Islamic Auction 9 lots will be determined during the live sale that will be held on 24-25 April 2025.
