Pre-reform issues, Arab-Sasanian. al-Hajjaj b. Yusuf. AH 75-95 / AD 694-713. AR Drachm (32.4mm, 3.98 g, 9h). TART (Tawwaj) mint. Dated AH 77 (AD 696/7). Obverse margin: bism Allah / la i- laha i- la A- / llah wahdahu Muhammad ra- / sul Allah, with the la -i and la A- in the second quadrant arranged vertically. Malek, Arab-Sasanian p. 225 = Morton & Eden 48 (4 April 2011), lot 8, same obverse die; SICA 1, –; Album 35.1 var. (this transitional type not mentioned). Near EF, toned. Extremely rare.
The earliest drachms of al-Hajjaj b. Yusuf, struck in AH 76 and 77, have their obverse marginal legends arranged radially (see the previous lot). During AH 77, this attractive design was abandoned in favour of a reversion to the standard linear legends familiar from previous Arab-Sasanian drachms, written clockwise. This appears to be an extremely rare transitional type, on which the lam-alifs and the alif following them are written vertically, as on the radial drachms.
