Description
Umayyad Caliphate, Silver coinage. AR Dirham (28.1mm, 2.91 g, 10h). Janza mint. Dated AH 92 (AD 710/11). Obverse border: five plain annulets with one pellet between them at 12 o'clock
Obverse margin: pellet below d of duriba, pellet below J of Janza, triplet of pellets below unit of date. Klat 249; al-‘Ajlan p. 162, no. 19. Near EF. Excessively rare.
Ex Morton & Eden 82 (27 April 2017), lot 15.
An extremely rare mint for Umayyad silver, ‘Janza’ was the Arabic form of Ganja, which is now the third-largest city in present-day Azerbaijan. While some mediaeval sources record that Muslim Janza was founded under the ‘Abbasids in the mid-3rd/9th century, the name is an ancient one and there is little doubt that Ganja was founded at a much earlier date. A later but more plausible account records that the Arab town of Janza was founded in AH 39, during the first Muslim incursions into eastern Transcaucasia. However, Umayyad Janza appears to have been a relatively modest foundation, certainly in comparison with the chief town of the region, Barda‘a. It was only with the decline of the ‘Abbasids that Janza grew to prominence, and it may be this which led some writers to assume that Janza had not existed before the ‘Abbasid period.
