'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Muktafi. AH 289-295 / AD 902-908. AV Dinar (23.2mm, 4.12 g, 6h). Al-Mawsil mint. Dated AH 291 (AD 903/4). Citing the vizier Wali al-Dawla in the fourth line of the obverse field. Bernardi type 228; Album 243.2. Lightly creased. VF with attractive rich toning. Of the highest rarity, apparently unpublished and believed unique.

Al-Mawsil is an extremely rare mint for ‘Abbasid gold. This is not merely an unpublished date for the mint but also an unpublished type, since the vizier Wali al-Dawla is only named on dinars issued in AH 291.
