'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Muqtadir. AH 295-320 / AD 908-932. AV Dinar (24.4mm, 4.14 g, 8h). Mah al-Kufa mint. Dated AH 310 (AD 922/3). SICA 4, 813 (same obverse die); Bernardi 242Mr; Album 245.2. Good VF. Very rare.
The mint-name on this coin was re-engraved on the die, with traces of the original Mah al-Basra visible beneath Mah al-Kufa.
Mah al-Basra was the name given by the Arabs to Nihawand, while Mah al-Kufa was their name for Dinawar. These names reflect the long-standing arrangement whereby the revenues from Dinawar were allocated to al-Kufa, while those from Nihawand were remitted to Basra.
