Description
'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Radi. AH 322-329 / AD 934-940. AV Dinar (22.4mm, 4.04 g, 4h). Isbahan mint. Dated AH 326? (AD 937/8). Obverse margin reads: bism Allah duriba hadha al-dinar sitt wa ‘ashrin wa thalath mi‘a. Cf. Bernardi 288Mb (known only for a unique specimen dated AH 324); Album 254.1. Crudely struck, centres weak. Good Fine. Of the highest rarity, apparently unpublished and believed unique.
The only other ‘Abbasid dinar of al-Radi from Isbahan known to Bernardi was dated AH 324, and is of similarly crude style. On this piece, the word sanat has been omitted from the mint/date legend, and the unit of the date is poorly engraved; it has been read here as ‘6’, because the final tooth is notably higher than the others, but might be intended for ‘3’.
Isbahan came under the control of the Buwayhids in AH 323, and standard Buwayhid dirhams naming ‘Ali b. Buwayh were issued there in AH 323 and 324. However, ‘Abbasid dirhams were being struck in Isbahan once again by AH 326, and it appears that that control of the city was disputed during al-Radi’s reign. The crude style of both this dinar and the Bernardi specimen suggests that they may have been produced at temporary or unofficial mints.
The final winners of all CNG Islamic Auction 9 lots will be determined during the live sale that will be held on 24-25 April 2025.
