Balog, Ayyubids 79; Album 785.3. Good VF, pierced and with pin-marks in fields. Extremely rare.

This is the only gold coinage issued by Saladin in Syria. It has long been associated with his decisive victory over the Crusaders at the battle of Hattin, which took place in this year. After Hattin, Jerusalem itself was surrendered to Saladin's forces, while the True Cross was captured during the battle. Balog notes that Saladin's adoption of the extra titles of Sultan al-Islam wa'l-muslimin are particularly appropriate in the context of these events.
