Description
Burji Mamluks. al-Zahir Sayf al-Din Bilbay. AH 872 / AD 1467. AV Ashrafi (13.9mm, 3.41 g, 2h). Mint and date not visible. Balog, Mamluk, Additions and Corrections 800B; Album 1023. Good VF. Extremely rare.
The gold ashrafis of the ephemeral ruler Bilbay are among the greatest rarities of the Mamluk series. He ruled briefly after the death of Khushqadam, who succumbed to dysentery in AH 872, but Bilbay’s authority was fatally compromised by the influence of other mamluks recruited by Khushqadam. After reigning for less than two months, Bilbay was deposed in favour of Timurbugha, another short-lived Mamluk sultan. Timurbugha was himself overthrown later in AH 872 and replaced by Qa'itbay, but while Timurbugha was allowed to live on in honourable retirement, the unfortunate Bilbay died in AH 873.
