Ilkhanids. Uljaytu. AH 703-716 / AD 1304-1316. AV Dinar (23.1mm, 7.44 g, 3h). Type A. Sultaniya mint. Dated AH 707 (AD 1307/8). Diler –; Album 2177. Good VF, slightly creased. Extremely rare.
The city of Sultaniya was founded by Arghun, but it was Uljaytu who decided to make it the Ilkhan capital. His own magnificent mausoleum, which still survives, was once intended to be a shrine for Imam ‘Ali and Imam Husayn, whose remains Uljaytu had planned to translate from their resting places in Iraq. But this project never came to fruition, and the building went on to become Uljaytu’s tomb and memorial.
The final winners of all CNG Islamic Auction 9 lots will be determined during the live sale that will be held on 24-25 April 2025.
