Description
Ilkhanids. Sati Beg, Queen. AH 739 / AD 1338-1339. AV Fractional Dinar (15.9mm, 0.97 g, 11h). Al-Jazira mint. Dated AH 739 (AD 1338/9). With title al-sultan al-‘adil. Diler 721 (this type not recorded in gold); Album K2231. Fine, pierced. Extremely rare.
From the Collection of an Alexandrine Numismatist, formed before 1955.
The sister of the Ilkhanid ruler Abu Sa‘id, Sati Beg was betrothed to the powerful amir Chupan at the time of Abu Sa‘id’s succession. While Chupan was later executed on Abu Sa‘id’s orders, the lives of Sati Beg and her son, Surgan, were spared. After Abu Sa‘id’s death in AH 736, Sati Beg remarried the new Ilkhanid ruler, Arpa Ga’un.
Arpa Ga’un’s rule lasted less than a year, as the Ilkhanate began to disintegrate. After his death, Sati Beg and Surgan initially threw in their lot with Hasan Buzurg, the founder of the Jalayrid dynasty. But Hasan Buzurg was defeated by Hasan Kucek, a grandson of Sati Beg’s first husband Chupan, who raised Sati Beg herself to the Ilkhanid throne in AH 739. Hasan Kucek’s intention was to rule through Sati Beg, and her authority was confined to the lands he controlled. But he soon became increasingly mistrustful of her, and deposed her after a reign of only a few months. She was then forcibly married to Hasan Kucek’s new candidate for the throne, Sulayman Khan.
Hasan Kucek was murdered four years into Sulayman Khan’s reign. Sati Beg and Sulayman Khan survived him by at least two years. Her ultimate fate is not recorded, although she may have perished along with her son Surgan, who was executed by Hasan Buzurg in AH 746.
