Description
Durrani Shahs. Taimur Shah. AH 1186-1207 / AD 1773-1793. AR Rupee (23.6mm, 11.45 g, 9h). Marw mint. Dated AH (11)82? (AD 1768/9). Whitehead —. Near VF, lightly cleaned, test-mark on reverse. Extremely rare, believed to be an unpublished mint for the Durranis.

The date AH 1182 would suggest an issue of Taimur as Nizam but the couplet is that of Taimur as king.

From the early 11th/17th century until the closing years of the 12th/18th, the oasis of Marw was ruled by a series of Qajar governors. After the conquest of Isfahan by the Hotaki Afghans in AH 1135 / AD 1722, Afsharid control over Marw progressively weakened. Marw emerged as an independent principality following the death of the Afsharid ruler Nadir Shah in AH 1160 / AD 1747.

The longest-lived Qajar roler of Marw was Bayram ‘Ali Khan Qajar (circa AH 1168-1200 / AD 1755-1786). He maintained friendly relations with the neighbouring emirate of Bukhara and its ruler Daniyal-Biy, founder of the Mangit dynasty. But the latter’s successor, Shah Murad, took a very different view, and was determined to bring Marw under his control. He launched two campaigns to capture the city, during which Bayram ‘Ali Khan was killed and Marw’s independence ended.

It has not been possible to find any evidence of Taimur Shah Durrani occupying or controlling Marw. but he is known to have come into conflict with Shah Murad almost immediately after the latter captured the city. The two sides met in battle in AH 1202 / AD 1788, and it appears that Taimur Shah won a decisive victory, but internal divisions within his troops and a revolt elsewhere in the Durrani lands forced him to negotiate terms. For his part, Shah Murad went on to Marw’s irrigation system and began deporting its inhabitants in this year.
