Description
CILICIA, Lalassis. 1st century AD. Æ Dichalkon (15.5mm, 2.60 g, 12h). Aphrodite, nude from the waist up, standing left, holding flower and long scepter / Scorpion. RPC I 3710B; SNG Levante 562; SNG von Aulock 5695; Triton XVIII, lot 686 (hammer $3250). Earthen green patina. VF. Rare.
From RPC Online: ‘The dating of this issue is uncertain. Von Aulock assigns it to the first century AD, whereas Levante dates it to the first century BC. Lalassis was governed by Ajax (high priest and toparach) towards the end of Augustus’s reign and during the reign of Tiberius. But the scorpion alludes to Antiochus IV of Commagene, who ruled over a large part of Cilicia after AD 38. The use of the letter form Ⳟ for Σ also suggests a later date.”
Closing Date and Time: 16 April 2025 at 12:18:20 ET.
All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
