TICKETS & PASSES, London. Chelsea. The King’s Private Road. Struck CU Pass (32mm, 14.02 g, 12h). Contemporary counterfeit of Type III, issued by Thomas Ripley, Surveyor of the King’s Private Roads, 1737-1756. Dated 1737. Crowned GR, stamped 696 / THE/ KINGS/ PRIUATE/ ROADS; below, TR monogram (Thomas Ripley) flanked by 17 37. S. Bendall, “The King’s Private Road Passes,” in NumCirc CIII.9 (November 1995), fig. 15 B/c (this piece illustrated and discussed); D&W –; Mitchiner, Jetons –. Pierced for issue, some light marks. Good VF. A rare example of one of only two contemporary forgeries of the Type III passes known to Bendall.
